Gary Player becomes Patron of Equestria

GARY PLAYER, world golfing legend and distinguished horse-breeder, has agreed to be the Patron of Equestria, an indoor equestrian event which will have its inaugural showjumping championships in the Coca Cola Dome at Northgate from December 2 to 4.

Elizabeth Mohr, owner and organiser of Equestria, says: “It is, indeed a great honour to have Gary Player as our patron. We are delighted.

“Equestria will be on par with major international showjumping events in the United States, United Kingdom and Europe and we do not have royalty in South Africa to be associated with such a classy event. But it will now undoubtedly be elevated in status with the endorsement of a man of his stature.

“Gary is not only a world golfing legend, but is acknowledged in other international sporting bodies and is respected for his contribution to the social development of disadvantaged people.”

She adds: “He is also held in high esteem in equestrian circles. He made his mark as a distinguished horse-breeder several decades ago and made a valuable contribution to the development of equestrian sport when he imported the first quarter-horses to South Africa in 1973.”

Player says: ”I am delighted with this honour and had no hesitation in accepting the invitation to become patron of Equestria. I am convinced that it will introduce South Africans to a new level of family entertainment, while it will give our riders the exposure they so richly deserve.

“I am also proud to be associated with the fundraising for the Highveld Horse-Care Unit and Society for Animals in Distress, which will be supported by Equestria.”
